A Poem: The World, As It Is

A Poem: The World, As It Is

(Filed under: Living Letters Vol. 1 Status: Filed. Sealed. Pending Release)

The world is not gentle.
It will forget your birthday,
break your teacup,
and sometimes your heart.
It will walk past the homeless man
and spend $9 on a smoothie.
It will reward cruelty,
recycle apathy,
and let children cry
while adults look at their phones.

But—

The world also hides love notes
in impossible places.
It lets daisies grow in sidewalk cracks
and strangers hold doors
with a nod that says,
“I see you.”
It gives second chances in the form of sunrises,
and forgiveness in the form of tears.

It let him stay.
It let you stay.

And it keeps letting poems happen
in the mouths of people
who’ve known both silence and song.

So live here.
Not blindly.
But bravely.

With your lantern heart
and your too-much love.

Because even this world—
with all its bruises and bad lighting—
is worthy of being loved back.
